Crawl Space Mold in Greenville, SC: What We Found Under One Home

A Greenville homeowner noticed a strong musty smell and wondered whether kittens or another animal might have gotten into the crawl space. When we inspected under the home, we found the source of the odor: the crawl space had mold throughout, and all of the insulation needed to be removed.

This was one specific Greenville home, and every crawl space is different. Here is what we found and the work JHS Crawlspace Specialist completed.

WHAT WE FOUND UNDER THE HOME

The homeowner's guess about an animal was understandable, but the smell was coming from the crawl space. The conditions underneath the home showed why it was important to inspect instead of guessing from the odor alone. We found mold in the crawl space and removed all of the insulation as part of the work.

A musty odor can have more than one cause. Moisture, damp materials, drainage issues, plumbing leaks, and other conditions can all play a part. Smell alone cannot tell you exactly what is happening, and it does not mean every home needs the same repair.

HOW JHS HANDLED THIS GREENVILLE CRAWL SPACE

For this project, we removed all of the insulation, completed a full mold treatment, and installed an encapsulation system. The encapsulation was intended to help control moisture and humidity entering the crawl space.

Those steps were based on what we found in this home. Another crawl space with an odor might need a different solution. Some may need a vapor barrier or a drainage repair; some may need insulation removed or other moisture work. A full encapsulation is not automatically the right answer for every house.

WHY THE INSPECTION MATTERS

A smell can point you toward a problem, but it  cannot show whether insulation is affected, where moisture is entering, or whether water is collecting below the home. An inspection lets someone look at the actual conditions before recommending work.

At JHS Crawlspace Specialist, I handle the inspection myself. I show the homeowner what I find and explain what, if anything, needs attention. If the crawl space does not need work, I will say so. You should understand the problem before deciding what repair, if any, makes sense.

CONCERNED ABOUT A MUSTY CRAWL SPACE IN GREENVILLE?

If you are in Greenville or elsewhere in the Upstate and notice a persistent crawl space odor, call JHS Crawlspace Specialist at 864-804-9384 to schedule an inspection. I will look at the crawl space, explain what I see, and recommend work only when the conditions call for it.

This Greenville project is a reminder that the source of a smell is not always what you first suspect. The useful next step is to inspect the crawl space and base the solution on what is actually there.
